Burnett-Powell Mill

Joseph Morgan ran a mill here on the left bank (OCM Aug 1777; CDB AG, pg 299) and Charles Morgan ran a ferry nearby (May 1776). Both Swain (1899) and Hadley (1991) refer to R. James Powell’s and Lucian Burnett’s as two different sites, but these were successive owners of the same mill (CDB AN, pg 556, CDB AZ, pg 129 & CDB CH, pg 392; NCSA). Burnett built his mill about 1840. Swain (1880) says the dam was intact in 1880, but that the mill had recently burned. This must be why Powell sold it in 1891 for 40% of what he had paid in 1876. The former wood and stone dam was inundated when the Bynum Dam was raised in 1922.
