Bynum Mill
Luke Bynum began a gristmill in this location in 1779. The cotton mill era came to Bynum in 1872 with the founding of the Bynum Manufacturing Co. Chatham County DB AU, page 442 records that Carney Bynum sold his old gristmill to Bynum Manufacturing Company for $1,000 in stock in 1872. The original cotton mill (a three story frame structure as reported by the Chatham Record on 4/15/1880) burned in 1916, but it was rebuilt in brick and operated until 1986. The closed mill has suffered numerous floods and at least one fire since then and is very dilapidated.
