Daniel Mill (King's Mill)
This mill is shown by Mcrae Brazier (1833) with the name Daniel by it. Jonathan Daniel was the recipient of a number of land grants in this vicinity in the 18th century, although no Daniel deeds were found mentioning this mill. The mill was evidently sold to Christopher Barbee, an important early figure in the history of UNC. Barbee's son-in-law was a member of the Cave family and owned this mill after Mr. Barbee's death. Still later the King family owned this mill (Battle 1912). About 1900 the mill was owned by Henderson Oldham (whom Battle calls "an excellent colored man"), but it washed away in a flood in 1923 (Vickers 1999).
The mill building stood one the south bank and part of the dam is plainly visible. The north buttress was a prominent rock outcropping. Just downstream, on the south bank, you can clearly see the area where the material for the dam was excavated. The stone dam that stood here must have been at least 12' tall.
