Upriver: I can find no further mills on the Haw River proper.

George D Boyd Mill 2

This was originally the John Caffey Mill. According to Robert W Carter Jr., the Caffey family received land grants in this area in 1778 and 1779. The mill was built on the north bank about 1801 when the Caffey's bought 9 acres on the south bank opposite their land. The mill passed through the Caffey family for several generations. The Caffeys intermarried with the Patrick family, which owned the Patrick-Cunningham mill at that time. In 1836 the mill sold to Samuel Hill, whose daughter Minerva married George D. Boyd.

The mill passed through various family members by inheritance, but was bought by George D. Boyd. Boyd apparently rebuilt the mill and dam before 1850. In 1850, the dam was rock and earth, 156 feet long with a ten foot race and an undershot wheel. Four foot high ruins of the dam were observable in the 1980's.

Boyd was sued about the title to the land in 1856 and he lost. He was permitted to remove the mill and equipment from the site and was permitted to remove the bridge below the mill. The court ordered the no mill be built there in the future and none ever was.
