Hartsaw’s Mill
This mill was near Gunter Harris Island and is now buried in the backwater of Jordan Lake. Swain (1899) described this ‘mill site’ as ‘unimproved’ – meaning that there was a rapid here. Swain puts it 2 miles above Bland’s Mill. Chatham DB E, Page 339 shows that ‘Phillip Hartso’ purchased land adjacent to the Gunter family (for whom the island is presumably named) in 1786. Phillip Hartsaw also bought land here as late as 1824 on the east/north side of the river “opisit Hartsaw Mill” (DB Z, page 207). This deed also mentions that the property included a small island.
