Patrick-Cunningham Mill

This was originally the Robert Thompson Mill (Hughes Map) established about 1765, although Carter writing in the Journal of Rockingham County History says that the mill was originally built by John Davis on land owned by Lord Granville. In any case, it was sold to William Patrick before 1771.

Carter says that about 1825 James Patrick build a large rock dam, 125 feet long and 28 feet high, replacing a plank dam that had washed out several times. This dam was apparently so substantial that it acted as a bridge as well. The mill was sold in 1844 following James Patrick's death and at that time had to runs of stones and an overshot wheel according to an advertisement for the sale inthe Greensborough Patriot (6/1/1844). John M Cunningham, one of James Patrick's grandsons, bought the mill in 1844 and sold it to David L Wright in 1857. D L Wright also owned a mill on Candy Creek.
