Pritchard Mill

This mill is shown by Tate (1890) with this name, just above Damascus Church Road on Pritchard's Mill Creek. The wheel pit, very extensive mill race and buttresses of the dam can still be seen. The operation had very high head for this area, perhaps 30 feet.

William F Strowd bought this mill in a series of transactions around 1870 (ODB 41, pg 161; ODB 39, pg 289; ODB 39, pg 329; ODB 30, pg 346) "up Price's Creek to the mouth of Cumbo branch thense up said branch to the cotton gin seat near the mill . . . known as the Matthew Mccollum Mill property." Those deeds also make reference to the upper and lower mill ponds and it seems clear that although the title to the property in 1870 was complex, it definitely had formerly belonged to Jehiel Atwater.

The 1860 Manufacturing Census lists the W A and J W Pritchard Mill as being on Price's Creek - having a 30 foot overshot water wheel. The Pritchard's had bought the mill from W F Stowd in 1885 (Orange DB 51, pg 42).
