Sypart Mill

This mill was on New Hope Creek under what is now Jordan Lake just downstream of the US-64 bridge.

This mill was already existing when the Orange Ct Min authorized it to become a public grist mill in Feb 1765.

This mill is shown as the Sugg Mill on the Ramsey map (1870). But it was originally known as the Francis Sypart (or Cypret) Mill. In 1797, John and Lucy Kilby sold this mill to John Simmons (Chatham DB J, pg 164), who sold the same property to Barlett Lightfoot and Oliver Prince (DB N, pg 302) in 1803.

On page of the Archibald D Murphey Papers, Murphey wrote in 1820: "There is a Valuable Mill on New-Hope ten Miles from Haywood, built by Mr. Archd. Haralson during the last year, and lately conveyed to Col. Farrar and myself."

The estate of R M Sugg sold this mill to Lucian F Baldwin and Melville T Baldwin in 1873 (Chatham DB AP, pg 511).

Hadley (1991) shows this as the James Thomas Mill.
