Upriver:Darks Mill

Pace's Mill

The first mill here was built by Henry Brewer before 1786 (CDB D pg 225, CDB F, pg 43, CDB X, pg 30 & CDB AM, pg 198). When James Pace bought the mill in 1877 (CDB BR, pg 306), the dam was 8 feet high and 100 feet long with a 450 foot race (Swain 1899). The ford here was known as Henry Brewer’s Ford (CCM Feb 1784 & Aug 1784). It was replaced by a bridge in the late 1820’s (Norwood 1994), presumably a private toll bridge (Chatham Record 1/10/1884). A new bridge was built in the 1870’s (London 1876). That bridge was damaged in a flood and collapsed in a windstorm (Record 4/26/1883, 6/11/1885). The County built a new covered bridge (Chatham Home 11/10/1887; NCSA), but it was soon knocked off its brick piers by a tornado (Record 9/15/1892). Another tornado destroyed both the mill and the final bridge 32 years later (Record 5/8/1924). The old piers still stand in the river. Nealy (1982) calls the class II rapids here Little Nantahala and (erroneously) Old RR Bridge Rapid.
